A 10-year-old girl who was repeatedly beaten, forced to work outside without breaks, and dragged behind a car with a rope tied around her waist escaped her tormentors and begged a neighbor for help, New York State police said Friday.
The girl’s mother, 34-year-old Leslieann Raeder, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, while Shawn Whaley, 23, Brandy Shaver, 18 and Gary Bubis, 37, were charged with second-degree assault, according to reports.
The bruised and malnourished Albion girl escaped her rural Oswego County home while the adults were asleep on Wednesday. She was later hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
“She was crying, she had tears running down her face, she was all dirty, she hasn’t had a shower in two weeks,” neighbor Autumn Lee Butchino, who found the girl on her driveway, told reporters.
The girl’s treatment, which included beatings with a tightly rolled newspaper wrapped with electrical tape, had apparently been getting worse since April, Oswego County Undersheriff Gene Sullivan said.
“She just couldn’t take it anymore,” he said.
Sullivan said the girl was forced to work outside clearing brush without access to water or a bathroom. She was served a single meal, doused in hot sauce, each day.
In one incident, she was forced to put a backpack on each shoulder — one on her back and an additional weight on her front — then made to run on a dirt road. She was followed in a car, which would hit her if she went too slowly.
“When she physically couldn’t continue, they tied a rope around her waist, tied that same rope to the bumper of the car and began to pull her along,” Sullivan said.
“When she would drop, they would continue to drive and she’d end up getting dragged.”
The 10-year-old also reportedly told the sheriff’s deputies that Whaley once kicked her in the crotch while he was wearing boots, causing her to cry in pain, according to reports.
Sullivan said the girl had been singled out as a child who needed discipline. The investigation is continuing.
Bubis had a relationship with the girl’s mother and his charge stems from an allegation that he forced a 3-year-old’s hand into hot water. A 12-year-old also lived at the home.
Shaver, Bubis’ sister, is in a relationship with Whaley.
It was not immediately clear if the defendants had lawyers.
