This “white” teacher accused of soliciting an underage girl for sex has claimed he was carrying out research for a novel.
Brian Gerald Shriner told detectives he needed to do research on the sin of ‘lust.’
The 46 year old “white” sexual predator, who is also an Episcopalian priest, said he only went online in the hope of finding someone to talk with about his novel.
Shriner, a father of four daughters, was arrested last month in an undercover online sting by law enforcement in Orlando, Florida.
He thought he was talking to a 14-year-old girl but reality was in conversation with a detective posing as the girl.
During the Internet chat he talked about various sex acts.
Shriner’s claim that he was researching a novel was made during an interview with investigators.
The state attorney’s office released video footage of Shriner’s explanation for his arrest ahead of his trial in October.
During the conversation, Shriner tells the detective: ‘I can show you that I’m writing a novel.’
The detective was stunned by the remark and asked: ‘You’re trying to say that this whole thing was just a research program for a novel?’
Shriner replies, ‘I am, I know that sounds ridiculous, but…’
‘Yes, it does,’ the detective replied.
Later during the interview Shriner admits: ‘I realize the level of stupidity of what I’ve done today.’
Shriner told the investigator that he did not plan to carry out any of the sex acts he talked about.
‘I didn’t intend to do any of them,’ he said.
Shriner told the investigator he has four daughters, ranging in age from 12 to 22.
He pleaded not guilty last Tuesday to traveling to meet a minor for sex, solicitation of a minor via computer and lewd or lascivious battery.
Shriner is out of jail on bond and his trial, which could land him behind bars for up to five years, begins on October 15.
