This vicious “white” beast was led to Troy City Court yesterday February 21st 2012, in connection with the death of a toddler found at Griswold Heights Apartment complex.
Robert Hayden, 29, suffocated his ex-girlfriend’s 21-month-old boy by placing his hand over the crying baby’s mouth, city law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
A six-week investigation kept leading detectives back to Hayden, the last person to be with Avery Cahn, Capt. John Cooney said.
After repeated questioning and working with the Rensselaer County Medical Examiner’s Office regarding the toddler’s autopsy findings, detectives arrested Hayden at his Polk Street residence at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Shannon Pozniakas, the child’s mother returned home to find her son dead in the crib. Law enforcers came to the home after they were alerted to the situation by a Troy Fire Department ambulance squad at the scene.
Hayden was found a short distance away by police patrols as he walked along Campbell Avenue, police said. Hayden cooperated with police and was brought in for questioning.
Hayden was arraigned Tuesday in City Court on a single count of second-degree manslaughter. The charge carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
