Newark Law Enforcement Officials arrested a “white” animal known as John A. Nelson, 20, of Wilmington, for the attempted murder and rape of a 17-year-old woman, also from Wilmington, while they were attending a party in the unit block of Academy Street.
Around 1 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 29, officers responded to a large party at a residence across from the Aetna Fire Station and began to clear a large crowd leaving the party. Officers heard screams for help at the rear of the residence and found the 17-year-old woman lying on the ground below a second floor window, being aided by several individuals.
Investigators learned that the victim had been alone in a locked second floor bedroom when Nelson, who is an acquaintance, kicked in the door. The victim attempted to flee, but Nelson prevented her. During the struggle, he grabbed her by the throat and strangled her to the point of unconsciousness. He then sexually assaulted her and afterward threw her from the bedroom window.
The victim was taken to Christiana Hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries from the fall, including a broken arm and punctured lung. She is currently admitted to Christiana Hospital
Nelson was identified by the victim, and officers located him at his residence in Wilmington. He was taken in custody without incident.
He was charged with first degree attempted murder, first degree rape, first degree kidnaping, first degree burglary, strangulation, third degree assault and criminal mischief and was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $286,600 secured bail.
